History

The league was constituted in 1923 when 16 clubs from the Greater Belfast area obtained permission from the IFA to form a league solely for amateur players. Initially membership was confined to teams from Public Bodies, Private Associations, Schools and Firms.

Over time and with more than 400 clubs having been in membership, the league currently consists of three divisions of thirteen sections providing a base for 94 clubs with a total of 179 teams taking part competitively in Intermediate and Junior status competitions.

The first serving Chairman of the league was F.J. Cochrane followed in 1966 by the original Hon. Secretary W.A. Corry until he was succeeded by T.A. Logan in 1968.

The fourth holder of this office, taking over in 1976, was W. Carlisle and then S.J. Shaw was appointed in 1986 who resigned at the end of season 2010/11. Mr T.E.Pateman then took over the Chair until 2023 when Mr S.J. Carlisle took up the position of seventh Chairman.
